~ Three Day Camp for String Instruments ~

The Suzuki Workshop is a three day program for Suzuki string students in a beautiful mountainous setting. The program will balance music, related arts and recreational activities.

Faculty

Pam Reit ~ Violin

Pam Reit has been a Suzuki teacher for 20 years. She has taught at Institutes and Workshops around the United States. She is the Music Director of Vermont Suzuki Violins, Inc. in Northern Vermont. She teaches privately in her home while raising her children Layla and Abby. She has a BM from Peabody Conservatory and an MM from Rice University.

Erik Madsen ~ Violin
Erik Madsen decided to become a Suzuki violin teacher when he heard the Japanese tour group perform in Montreal in 1975. He has taught ever since. In addition to taking teacher training and observing at institutes, his teacher development includes a period of study with the late Dr.Suzuki in Matsumoto, Japan. A B.Mus. in Performance and an M.A. in Education were both obtained at McGill University. Erik founded Institut Suzuki Montreal in 1979 and directed it for 25 years. He currently maintains a studio in the Montreal area, where he teaches pupils aged 3 - 17, from beginning to advanced players. Erik also conducts string orchestras. Several of his former pupils have gone on to careers in music or are presently enrolled in conservatories. The majority have chosen other paths, their lives enriched by music. Erik is married to Kirsten, a Suzuki cello teacher. They have four children: Emmanuel, Isaac, Jacob and Else.
Chris Cavanaugh ~ Violin
B.A., theology, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago. Suzuki Training at Hartt Suzuki Institute and Capital Suzuki Institute. Studied with John Fredrickson of American Conservatory. Performances include New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra and the band Brother Sun. Worship Director with various churches. He has been teaching violin privately for fourteen years and currently also teaches at Manchester (NH) Community Music School.
Kirsten Madsen ~ Cello
Kirsten Madsen began playing cello at the age of three with the Suzuki Method. As a student she won many competitions and honors. At the age of thirteen she began teaching as an aide. She went on to study under cellist Wolfgang Laufer and was chosen to perform in master classes for renowned cellists such as Truls Mark and Sharon Robinson. In 1995 she completed a one year teaching apprenticeship at the Georgia Academy of Music with Dr. Beth Cantrell. To this experience she added short term teacher training courses through the SAA. She maintained a private studio as well as teaching both cello and Musical Beginnings at the Georgia Academy of Music. In addition to teaching she performed regularly with a string quartet, and was assistant principal of the Dekalb Symphony Orchestra. In 2000 she moved to Montreal to marry Suzuki violin teacher Eric Madsen. They enjoy a combined private studio. Kirsten now teaches part time as most of her time is occupied in caring for their four small children.
Eric Wright ~ Cello, Fiddle, Improvisation, Ensembles

Eric Wright graduated from The Sharon Academy, attended Skidmore College, and graduated from The Berklee College of Music on the dean's list. He began his cello studies in the first grade with Peter Blum. He has studied cello with John Dunlop, Ann Alton, Eugene Freisen, and Natalie Haas. He was principal cellist of the Vermont Youth Orchestra, winner of the concerto competition, and soloist with the orchestra. He has set his focus to playing in the celtic, old time, and bluegrass styles. Eric has played electric guitar in many rock groups, but currently plays the drums in a band. He has attended and worked at many Suzuki Camps and Festivals. Eric currently lives in Los Angeles where he is working as a composer for films and television.


Workshop Providers

Peter Blum ~ Workshop Director

Peter Blum has been a Suzuki teacher in Vermont for 17 years. He is the President of the Northeastern Suzuki Foundation which organizes large Festivals and Workshops. He has a BA in music from Vassar College, an MS in Music Education from the University of Illinois, and an MBA from RPI - Hartford Graduate Center. Peter has been the string teacher at the Wellspring Waldorf School for the past three years.

Kate Ullman ~ Recorder & Singing

Kate Ullman, Children's Chorus. B.A., Washington College, M.MEd., Hartt School of Music; Graduate Certificate, Kodaly Pedagogical Institute, Hungary. Ms. Ullman has taught chorus and classroom music in Windham County for 18 years. She has performed all her life as a singer, most recently in the role of Suora Beatrice in a production of Puccini's Suor Angelica at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro.

Eve DesJardins ~ Circle dancing
Eve DesJardins brings to her work a lifetime of dance and contemplative movement education. She holds a BA in Theater and Dance from Marlboro College and an MA in Dance /Movement Therapy from Antioch New England Graduate School. She is a circle dance teacher of 22 years, a trained singer and an improvisational folk harpist. As an experienced teacher of the "Music Together" approach to parent/child music classes, mothering her children through the Suzuki repetoire led to a natural integration between it's songs and movement expression. With Eve, your child will have a chance to joyfully dance to familiar songs from book one and two while being led in a developmentally appropriate way to strengthen the body's capacity to sense the living patterns in melody that breathe through us as we play our instruments.
Libbet Downs ~ Drama
Libbet Downs is the mother of three Suzuki students, now grown. She founded Puddledock Children's Theater in Reading, Vermont and has been teaching drama-improvisational theater and putting on plays--in local elementary schools for over fifteen years. She led classes in drama and storytelling at Suzuki camps for several years.
Linda Blum ~ Visual Arts

Linda Blum of Springfield, Vermont has been educated in art and teaching and is presently employed in a teaching position. Her painting is done with a fast-dry oil medium. There has been an on-going interest in puppetry and drama, and she has created many puppets, back drops and props. She has traveled with her puppets and plays. Her art interests are varied, and that enthusiastic creativity brings an interesting experience to the students. Linda has been on the faculty of the Springfield Schools for six years. She teaches "Art for Young Naturalists" at the Vershare Camp and has been teaching art at various Suzuki Camps and Festivals for the past eight years. She is presently working as a tutor through Club Z.

Emma McCumber ~ Sports
Emma McCumber played cello for many years, and participated in Suzuki camps throughout her childhood. She recently graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied Dance and Education.
